About the Virtual Basilica of Pompeii

This 3D model is a simple, hypothetical reconstruction of the basilica of Pompeii. It corresponds most closely to the reconstruction proposed by Karlfriedrich Ohr (Die Basilika in Pompeji, ed. Jürgen J. Rasch (Berlin: W. de Gruyter, 1991)). The scale of the building, and specific measurements of its plan and elevation are taken from Ohr's regularized plan, rather than from the basilica as actually built. The details of the interior decoration are generally indicative of what the basilica might have looked like, but do not exactly reproduce known features. The pattern of the first-style wall decoration is not exactly the pattern of the actual basilica, for example. In addition, there are some features that deliberately depart in significant ways from what is known about the basilica. I have not included the cellar below the tribune, for example. For technical reasons, the model has been simplified so that it can be represented by a relatively low-poly mesh, without complex materials. One result of that simplification is that the columns have smooth shafts, instead of being fluted as they are in the actual building. Another is that the exterior doors are solid wood, whereas the actual doors were probably open lattice-work. The model should nevertheless give a good overall impression of what the basilica was like in terms of the basic structure, the massing of forms, and the volumes of space.

Different versions of this basilica, not as close to the basilica of Pompeii, can be found on VRChat and Sansar. They can be located by searching those catalogues for "basilica."
